Courting Autumn

Autumn

The path of the witch is long and winding. For many years, I felt I was stumbling around in the dark. Through grit, intuition, and inexplicable luck I eventually found my way to a light-switch. It's interesting what I saw once the lights were on. I assumed the illuminated path would be easier. I assumed I would be able to immediately make a beeline for the exit and that after all this time I would finally be "done." Things were not so simple. Finding the map just revealed the extent of the ground I had yet to cover. I had a few more items to collect before escaping this dungeon.

With illumination came the knowledge of old contracts waiting to be restored. I had many old paths to walk, all of which I would have to walk in turn. For my first, I chose the Seasons. I had recently taken an interest in goetic magic, especially the practice's various connections to astral spirits. Approaches to astral magic vary, but I was already in the habit of focusing my personal practice on exploring the relationships embedded in the Zodiac.

The Zodiac can be divided in many ways, one of which includes assignation to the Seasons. I had already spent years working with the Seasons using simple rituals throughout the year. I had no reservations about approaching them in this way. The local season in my region was currently on the verge of Mid-Autumn. I would start there.

To Rite a Name

A common component of modern goetia is the invocation of authority. Conventional practice invokes the authority of the Abrahamic god, angels, celestial intelligences, demon kings, or dead magicians like Solomon or Cyprian. In each case, the theory of authority seems to differ slightly. Authority may be invoked due to promises made by a god to its people, primordial limits attributable to divine order, spoils from legendary battles, or existing pacts forged in the mythic past. I took this as an indication that the invocation of authority was somewhat flexible.

In my mundane life, I tend to lean on fraternal or paternal authority. In other words, I tend to prefer a theory of authority based on societies of mutual interest. This of course requires that I either invoke a shared lineage with the spirit or make a compelling argument for why the spirit should join our league. Assuming I have the former, how would I get the latter? I decided that name-dropping would get me a meeting to initiate negotiations. If only I had a name.

I have a pre-existing relationship with Autumn, as well as the planetary rulers of the Autumnal signs (Venus, Mars, and Jupiter). I'd like to be able to invoke Autumn by name before approaching the Zodiacal spirits of Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius. I used my usual method of crafting fu-like talismans and crafted a spell to learn Autumn's name. In this case, when I say "name" I mean a specific pass phrase or key that I use to refer to Autumn that is emblematic of our unique relationship, but also fit-for-purpose. This is comparable to a person being known by different names to different people in different circumstances (e.g. Ashley, Ash, Honey, Babe, Mom, Dr. Ashley Smith, etc).

I drew a sigilized orange leaf to act as the Archetypal focus for the spell. I surrounded the leaf with the symbols for Venus in Libra, Mars in Scorpio, and Jupiter in Sagittarius. I connected the Archetypal focus to the Terrestrial plane using the characters of Luna as a Celestial bridge. Normally, I would acquire ingredients by harvesting things from my local environment, then return home to perform the spell. In this case, I decided a longer walk into the forest was more appropriate as was performing the spell on-site.

The first ingredient I found was a bunch of marsh-marigold on the edge of a stream. These flowers had bright yellow blooms and were perched precariously on the edge of a rocky bank that reminded me of the Temperance card. I scrambled down the rocky bank and collected one of the blooms to tap into Venus in Libra.

It was some time before I found the next component, which I almost missed. Along the side of my path, I saw a forked cypress tree. A low-hanging branch had gently tapped the crown of my head with its fronds. The tree exhumed a martial scent so subtle that I stared at it for a few minutes just to convince myself that what I was seeing was actually there. Sufficiently convinced, I collected the frond that brushed my head as a bit of Mars in Scorpio.

The final piece, Jupiter in Sagittarius, proved even more difficult to acquire than the last. I wandered for some time before I found myself on an island in the middle of a lake. The island was home to a small grove of trees. I suppose I figured Jupiter might be found at "court." Nonetheless, Jupiter was not there. I inquired to the trees as to where I might find the lord of this forest. They put me on to a location across the lake. I initially assumed they had pointed me to another tree, but was quickly liberated of this notion when whatever I had locked on to started moving. I had not known trees to walk.

Upon reaching the other side of the lake, I met several dead ends. My senses told me I was in the right place, but I simply couldn't find what it was that I sensed. I eventually started back the way I came, figuring I would continue the search in another part of the forest. However, that was when an idea struck. Jovial things tend to be in abundance. What was currently in abundance?

It was the height Autumn. I was surround by falling leaves. The ground was covered in fallen leaves. I immediately became aware this particular working required catching a falling leaf before it hit the ground. I'll spare my dignity and omit some details, but suffice it say that catching a falling leaf is easier in theory than practice. I recommend a playful relationship with the Winds and a net.

All the necessary ingredients in hand, I quickly found a secluded spot to perform the rite. I appealed to the spirits of marigold, cypress, and oak to prepare an astral space to receive the name. I tapped into Luna to build a bridge between that astral space and my current environment. Once I felt the talisman was sufficiently imbued with the appropriate potentials, I destroyed it and scattered it to the winds. Within seconds, birds began to gather to my location and the wind began to pick up. The forest seemed to sing some phrase over and over again. I focused on the word and made note of its syllables.

At some point, I had closed my eyes to focus on the sound. When I opened them again, I found a particular bird staring directly at me from deeper in the forest. I believe it was a cedar waxwing and it seemed to be waiting for affirmation. I greeted it and expressed Gratitude. After that, the birds became quiet and the winds calmed.

On the Name

Pulling words out of the astral is a bit of a crapshoot. In my experience, audible manifestations are open to interpretation and do not reliably come in a modern tongue. For mysterious reasons, I often seem to receive names as abstract symbols or in audible Ancient Greek. I do not speak nor understand Ancient Greek, but I can read and pronounce it (again, for mysterious reasons). So, the hunt for what these names mean usually involves transliteration into Greek characters and a visit to Wiktionary. In this case, the word I heard in the forest roughly translated to "Mediator."

A Necromantic Rite

Candlelight

While exploring a new part of the forest, I came upon a hidden grove of abandoned charcoal grills laid out in a circle. The area appeared to have been a public park, but clearly had not been used for many years. The grills and hand operated pumping well were all grown over with shrubs and the entire area had been overshadowed and hidden by trees. It was very easy to miss.

Using my other senses, I picked up on something disembodied trying to communicate with me. Inspired by astrological magic, I felt like weaving an impromptu rite of necromancy. The method I used was inspired by a passage from the Greer and Warnock translation of Picatrix.

...to do any working with any of the planets, the working should be done with a body that is agreeable to the nature of the planet. ... Make the Ascendant fortunate with a benefic and the seventh house unfortunate with a malefic; this is because the Ascendant signifies the querent (and therefore it should be made fortunate in order that things should go vigorously forward), while the seventh house is assigned to the thing desired (and therefore it is appropriate that it be infortunated and debilitated in order for the ordained effect to be brought about).

The traditional astrological interpretation of this passage suggests a method focused on timing benefic and malefic planets with a rising sign and a seventh house suitable to some working. In my personal practice, I view these electional guidelines more as inspiration for magical pattern building. My experiments in natural magic leveraged reason and psychic ability to reveal sensible things associated via some hidden force that transcended space. I like to use astrology to reveal hidden connections that transcend time.

In this case, I'll ignore zodiacal considerations and focus on the arrangement of the planets as a sequence of events that inform ritual structure. The ascendant corresponds to the beginning and the 7th house corresponds to the end (the last of seven traditional planets). This might suggest a ritual structure that starts with a benefic planet (Venus or Jupiter) and ends with a malefic planet (Mars or Saturn), with the magical work occurring somewhere in the middle.

I stood in the middle of the grove and spoke the Charm of Cultivation (Jupiter). During the last stanza, I crossed my arms over my chest to direct the focus of the charm on making my body "agreeable." I then reached out to whomever was present with an ad-hoc charm.

Spirits of the Dead,
that time forgot.
Speak to me now.
Tell me your lot.

After a moment of listening, I began to see images of people walking around the grove, stoking fires, and picnicking. The era of the clothing spanned from the 1980s to the early 2000s. From the 2000s, attendance dropped off and this park was slowly forgotten. However, I saw that travelers like myself visited infrequently to this day. To this effect, one of the charcoal grills called out that it had something to show me. I approached and found two freshly emptied beer cans inside the grill which confirmed recent occupation. Satisfied that the charm had worked, I ended the ritual by reciting the Charm of Peace (Saturn) and returning the grove to its former inactivate state.

I'm still trying to confirm the other things I hit on. At this point, I don't want to read too deeply into the encounter. Witches tend to stumble upon strange areas. However, the presence of beer may suggest an avenue for ritual offerings. I may return to this site to explore its potential for obtaining a paredros. This particular section of the forest isn't far from an old family cemetery.

Lessons of Mars

shadow face

My natural magic thesis project continues to unfold. The last object I made was a natural Talisman of Discipline. I conducted an astrological reading prior to the experiment that suggested the working would result in some kind of test. I believe that test has been proctored by our good neighbors.

Terror in the Night

The test started a few weeks ago, when I was woken up in the early hours of the morning with the sense of my impending death. I lay in bed, in the dark, unable to move due to terror. I felt the presence of someone standing over my bed. This presence was not spiritual or metaphorical. I genuinely felt that someone had physically broken in to my home, made their way to my bedroom, and was watching me sleep with ill intention. I've had experiences in the past with shadowy figures or dead relatives visiting me in the night, but this was completely different.

I'm not someone that frightens easily, but this situation had me genuinely concerned for my personal safety. I laid in bed motionless trying to come up with a plan to defend myself. I sleep with a machete next to my bed and a gifted competition sword not far out reach. Unfortunately, I had woken up on my stomach, so my back was completely exposed. I didn't know if I
could react fast enough to defend myself against whomever was standing over my bed. I could not see them, nor did I know if they were armed. I couldn't even see whether the door to my bedroom was open to confirm whether I was imagining this whole situation. So, I just laid there. I made peace with my life and readied myself for death.

It never came. I eventually worked up the courage to move. No one was there. I checked the house and confirmed all the doors were still locked. I consulted with our home, ancestral, and landed spirits. They reported nothing unusual.

Conversations with the Cards

A few weeks went by and I forgot the incident. However, a dark cloud continued to hang over me. I was listening to a podcast recently that mentioned "demons standing over your bed at 3AM" and this triggered the memory of that terrifying night. I decided to follow up on this trigger with a series of tarot sessions. A loose transcript follows.

Query (Q): What's the source of this dark cloud?
Answer (A): You. You're marked.

Q: Is it related to the "demon" that visited me that night?
A: So to speak.

Q: Tell me about the demon. Where did it come from? Why did it come? Where did it go?
A: It came from a foreign land. It came to deliver a message. It died.

Q: How did it die?
A: As you've already surmised. (redacted)

Q: Foreign land? Did something follow me home from the ley line?
A: No.

Q: Something followed me home from the nexus?
A: Yes.

Q: Our good neighbors?
A: Yes.

Q: Why?
A: The well is running dry. They're unable to maintain their end of the bargain.

Q: What's missing?
A: Mars.

Q: I need to install Mars?
A: Yes.

Q: How?
A: You already have the means. Administer 7 strikes.

Returning to Foreign Soil

The next steps were clear. I needed to take the Talisman of Discipline to the good neighbors and stabilize the nexus. Previously, when I opened the nexus I had an intermediary spirit broker a deal for these visitors to act as a pseudo-Mars. It seems they were only able to maintain this configuration for a limited amount of time. I had over-estimated the resources available to this particular tribe of spirits. Back at home, I worked out a deal with the birds to lift this "mark" off of me and made preparations to return to the forest.

The journey to the tribal lands is long. In mundane time it takes only a few hours to go and come back, but there's no accounting for time while you're in there. It's like being in a place that's eternally at dusk. The trees are strange, the land is strange, and the animals are completely quiet. Even my senses become dulled, as if someone put cotton in my ears. There is only one way in (marked by a strange stone monolith) and one way out (through a series of dizzying switchbacks). All this is to say, I don't like going there.

Approaching the entrance, it became clear that something was wrong. The glamour that normally hides the entrance was weak. I used the charm of illumination to inspect the flow of power through the landscape. Things were moving, but not nearly as efficiently as they should be. I crossed the threshold and immediately took note of a flash of blue in my periphery. They knew I was here. I whispered, "Go tell your queen to expect me." A shadow darted over my head and disappeared into the forest.

At this point, I was getting tired. Just getting to the entrance is a long trek. I paused for a moment and used the charm of radiance to mitigate fatigue. Refreshed, I headed deeper into the forest.

Plumber for Hire

I eventually came to the bottom of a valley where two trees covered in wood ears flanked my path. For some reason, I knew this was a gate. I requested entry and received it. I approached the spring at the bottom of the valley and asked what the problem was.

The naiad of the spring was in extremely poor condition. They had nearly drained her dry. Inspecting the landscape, I could see some sort of blockage further up the valley. The blockage appeared accidental. I decided to install the Talisman of Discipline there. Outside the tribal lands, I picked up a heavy stone. I knew I would need something to "administer 7 strikes." Crouched over the blockage, I drove the Talisman into the ground by administering 7 strikes with the stone. I counted each strike by stating each planet in Chaldean order. I finished the operation by saying the charm of discipline and investing Mars into this side of the valley.

Looking down next to the stick I just drove into the ground, I saw two small rocks. On one rock, a common brown spider sat as if it was watching me. The other rock was leaning against the newly installed talisman. The other temples had been linked with the Sun by moving soil from their locations to a central location under the Sun's command. I collected the second small rock with this intention in mind.

Returning to court, I related what I had done and verified that the naiad had indeed been unrestrained. We said our goodbyes and I ascended the valley through the dizzying switchbacks. Unfortunately, the task was only halfway complete. Bringing this new Martian temple into orbit with the other temples would require that I invest this small rock into the pre-existing Solar temple.

Returning Home

I had no intention of taking a rock from the tribal lands back to my home. Though sunlight was fading at this point, I had no choice but to make my way to the Solar temple. At this point, it seemed appropriate to use the charms of inspiration and discretion for a little extra boost of spirit and to ensure that my journey was unimpaired. Transporting the piece of mars to the Solar temple was completed without incident. On my way out, the nexus seemed nicely in balance and I also confirmed that the glamour over the entrance to the tribal lands had been restored.

When I arrived at home, I realized that I had not divested myself of the heavy stone I used to "administer 7 strikes." It seems I've traded one talisman for another.

Nymphaion

cave

I sometimes draw inspiration for magical work from classical literature. In Book 13 of the Iliad (How Odysseus Came to Ithaca), Homer describes a cave in the harbor of Phorcys at the island of Ithaca. This cave is sacred to the water nymphs known as Naiads. There actually exists a "Cave of the Nymphs" in Ithaca, also called "Marmarospilia." However, I was more interested in some of the esoteric hints that can be found in this passage.

The first hint regards timing, as Homer describes when the sailors transporting Odysseus arrive at the harbor. Note that Odysseus is also asleep.

When the brightest stars rose, which comes to tell us that the dawn is near...

The next part details some qualities of the sacred space:

At the head of this harbor is an olive tree covered with its long leaves, and near the tree is a beautiful dusky cave, sacred to the nymphs who are called Naiads. In the cave are great bowls (kraters) and two-handled jars of stone (amphoras), and in these the bees hive their honey. There are also tall poles of stone like the beams of a loom, where the nymphs weave webs of sea-purple wonderful to behold; there are springs of water never dry. It has two doors; one turned to the north, by which mortal men may descend; one on the south, meant rather for gods, by which men do not enter, but this is the road of the immortals.

The brightest star at dawn is Venus, the morning star. The olive tree is a symbol of Athena. The proximity to a spring of nymphs calls to mind the fate of Tiresias who was struck blind by a bathing Athena. The presence of honey may allude to Ambrosia, the nectar of the gods. The "sea-purple" cloth may allude to Tyrian purple, a dye made from the secretions of sea snails. Lastly, we see that mortals enter from the north and descend into the cave. Gods and immortals enter from the south, perhaps from a smaller hole in the southern ceiling like the cave in modern-day Ithaca.

Materials

I often use my home shower as part of a regular healing practice. As time has passed, my shower and bathtub have become imbued with the natural healing energies of water. Perhaps I could boost the efficacy of this effect by introducing a little Naiad magic. The first task I set myself was to find a Naiad and barter for a some power. Luckily, I knew where some Naiads might be hanging around.

As alluded to by the passage in the Odyssey, this operation is essentially Venusian. This meant that I'd be better off with minimal planning and let Intuition and Desire lead the way. Whatever I was making needed to have some way to "turn on" and "turn off" to avoid attracting errant deities (and incidental blindness). The entrance to my bathroom is coincidentally on the north side, though I didn't think the direction mattered much in this case. Nothing about the passage indicated to me that anything special need be done with the Anemoi. The more important point was that I was building a "door" for "immortals," specifically.

In terms of power sources, honey and something purple seemed appropriate. I was unlikely to find sea snails, but perhaps a visit to the beach would yield some purple shells. I'd also collect something from a Spring adjacent to a Lunar temple. However, as I was on my way to the nexus I had a sudden desire to stop by a thrift shop. While looking through the shelves of knickknacks, I found a decorative ceramic oil warmer and a bottle of purple shells! The oil warmer wasn't quite a krater, but it was bowl shaped. Adding a candle would be a convenient way to switch it off and on.

We had had several days of rain, so I knew the Spring would be flowing. The river flowing through the nexus was fat and treacherous. This meant reaching the Venusian temple, which required fording the river, was untenable. Luckily, the Lunar temple was more accessible. We were just passed the Full Moon and this was still evident upon reaching the Lunar temple. The entire area was noticeably colder and wrapped in a persistent breeze that seemed to blow from nowhere despite being among dense forest.

As expected, I found the Spring past the Lunar temple was flowing steadily. Water flowed from a small perch at the top of a 20 foot cliff where it formed a small pool from which it flowed along the valley floor into the main river. Alas, it occurred to me upon first approach that I had nothing to barter. I immediately knew I should have brought my recently acquired shells. I headed back to the trailhead, sorted out seven of the best looking purple shells and returned to the Spring. Such is the nature of a Venusian quest.

I began this part by greeting the Spring and waiting for a sign that I was okay to approach. When I reached the pool, I found a small flat stone sitting under the delicate waterfall formed by the flowing Spring. I instinctively knew to place what I had to barter on the stone. I set the shells on the stone and waited for an indication of acceptance. After a few minutes, the water landing on the stone knocked each of the shells off and into the pool, one-by-one. I got the sense that these shells were of sufficient quality for the Naiad to spin her web. Finally, I received a message to collect a certain amount of the Spring water. Strangely, despite flowing from the same physical source, this batch of water was noticeably different from the Lunar water I've collected here in the past. The water was heavy and smelled deeply of the Earth.

Construction

Laying a path from my bathroom to the Spring involved consecrating the oil warmer in much the same way as I prepare other talismans. In this case, I adapted the method to use the elemental energies harvested from the honey, shells, and Naiad water (dew). I facilitated this transfer using a sigil of Oceanus. I also wrote a short charm, taking inspiration from the Orphic Hymn to the Nymphs.

With this libation of dew and honey, I open a secret path to the damp cave where the daughter of great-hearted Okeanos dwells. Let the pure and nurturing waters of your spring flow swiftly from the Earth. Clothe this temple with your healing dew for as long as this light shines.

To activate the connection, I lit the candle, placed a shell in the bowl of the oil warmer, and spoke the words, "The path is open." I guided the energies of the sacrificial shell to the shells left at the Spring in the nexus. This forged a path between the locations for power to flow. As the "dew" from the Spring condensed in my bathroom "temple", I used it to reinforce my normal healing practice. After my shower, I closed the connection and spoke, "The path is closed." and extinguished the light.

Greeting the Seasons

Apples

I experimented with the neo-pagan practice of "Turning the Wheel" early in my magical career. It's unfortunate that modern interpretations of these practices often take the form of a strange mishmash of solar, fertility, harvest, and incestuous rites. I've found a simple and focused approach is more suitable to my personal practice. I omit the direct appeals to the solar and fertility aspects of seasonal rites and instead focus solely on timing.

The intention of these year-long rituals is to greet the Seasons as they arrive and use their presence to calibrate and re-balance my home. I generally don't bother with excessive warding or blanket protection rituals. I've found this practice alone can go a long way to prevent energetic blockages and help one's home fade into the background (avoiding notice). I've also found this practice useful for personal cultivation. At one time I really disliked the Winter. I had an awful time getting along in the cold and darkness. However, this practice has helped me come to terms with the facets of my personality that prevented me from enjoying the Winter like any other Season.

The focal point for these rituals is a buffet cabinet where I display seasonal decorations. These decorations might include cut seasonal flowers, stones, candles, knickknacks, or miniature Christmas trees. The display is often a mix of found, gifted, and crafted items. In effect, this area is an altar to the Seasons. I mark the initiation of each Season with a very simple ritual. I light a candle or burn some incense and say something like:

Spirits of <Season>,
Greetings and salutations,
I acknowledge your presence in all of Nature.

This greeting may also be accompanied by a gesture of greeting. I wait in front of the altar until I feel the seasonal energies start to flow into the house, displacing the stale and stagnant energies of the out-going Season. I leave the candle or incense to burn as long as necessary.

The timing of these rites will change with my location. I first determine my local average growing season. For example, if I were in Greenville, MS (USA) then I would consider the day after the last spring frost as Mid-Spring. The first fall frost would be Mid-Autumn. I would then use these dates and a tool like the average calendar date to find the midpoint between each season. For example, Mid-Summer is halfway between Mid-Spring and Mid-Autumn; Early Summer is halfway between Mid-Spring and Mid-Summer. The table below shows the typical neo-pagan holidays, the associated name of the initiating Season that I use and a comparison of how dates can differ if you pin them to the local growing season. Note that unlike the original Wheel, the dates I use for the season are flexible. Frost dates are averages that change year to year. The day I acknowledge the season is usually around the dates given below, but could vary by 2 weeks or more.

Landscape Alchemy

River Bend

Every so often on my excursions, I'll find a place in the forest with a natural abundance of magical energy. These spaces often occur at notable boundaries in the landscape. These may be along fault lines, forest clearings, abandoned cemeteries, or odd river bends. In one particular case, I happened upon an escarpment overlooking an interesting river bend close to where mountainous terrain transitioned to coastal plain. The area was split by high-powered electrical lines, flanked by a bridge with a storied past, and littered with abandoned mines. The river itself had managed to attract the attention of a local conservationist that served as a its caretaker. He was, for all intents-and-purposes, the priest of this stream (though he had yet to realize the spirit of the river had recruited him in this way). The whole area was a curious nexus of liminal sites and would make a nice location to harvest spell ingredients with some reorganization.

The Plan

Opening the nexus would involve marshaling the energies already present and strengthening the hidden connections (AKA "Occult Virtues") between and among them. My plan was to identify 7 natural sources of planetary energy in the landscape, rarefy these sources by establishing fonts, and link all these fonts. It's important to note that my agenda was not to block the natural flow of energy, but to temporarily divert and reconfigure the energy. Like in the body, blocked energy nexuses in the landscape may be prone to "explode." My alterations should dissipate with the nexus as the Saturnine forces of plate tectonics and weathering do their thing.

The Method

Chile Peppers

I spent several weeks scouting the location using a combination of bone-throwing, tarot, and on-site energy reading. I eventually found a place to site Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Luna, and Saturn. I decided to incorporate Terra by harvesting soil from each location. This left Sol and Mars, which were conspicuously absent. During my walkabout, I happened across a tribe of Fae in residence in a very remote part of the forest. Readings indicated a strong martial bent (as did an encounter with some curmudgeon ferns). Readings indicated the tribe's home could serve as an anchor for martial-like energies, but I was advised to recruit an intermediary spirit to strike the bargain, which I did.

This left the Sun, which would need to be fabricated and installed. I obtained eight fresh red chilies and hung them to sun-dry with instructions to absorb solar energy. I also obtained a garden statue to act as a solar focal point and consecrated it in the same way as the chilies.

Over the course of two weeks, I visited each site selected, buried a chili, and retrieved some soil. The method I used to install each planet closely resembles the method I use to charge sigils and talismans, but using each chili as a focal point. The locations for each planet were:

Venus - The entire left bank (looking downstream) of a section of river. She refused to be limited to a single location and demanded flower petals be spread.

Mercury - A pile of rocks adjacent to a prominent gate to a parking lot. I had initially sought to install him next to a road approaching the bridge, but he insisted upon the gate. I later found that though I thought I installed Mercury, Hermes showed up.

Luna - The top of a cliff overlooking a natural amphitheater of sorts. The cliff face is full of natural holes that look like votive receptacles. The location appears to be a popular hangout for teens to drink and do drugs. Her presence should enhance the experience.

Jupiter - He demanded to be installed at the highest point in a clearing overlooking the entire forest next to a high-power transmission line.

Saturn - I found an area where there appeared to be ruins of a burned down house. A landed spirit was in residence and agreed to the installation, but preferred it to be off the path on the approach to the ruins, not in the actual ruins.

Mars - I collected a bouquet of a wildflowers. I gave most of them to the intermediary spirit mentioned above along with one of the chilies. The flowers I kept would have to replace the soil I would normally collect, since the intermediary spirit would deliver the chili to the Fae serving as the Martial substitute on my behalf.

Sol - Installing the Sun took a bit more effort, as there wasn't an obvious source of pure solar energy present to round out this solar system. I consecrated a garden statue with solar energy in the usual way. With the soils and single remaining chili, I set off into the forest in the general direction of where I felt the Sun needed to go. I could see the location on the Astral, but didn't know exactly where it was on the physical. I just knew I was looking for a rocky outcrop bathed in sunlight.

The journey took me through a new part of the forest, including a natural "grave yard" of sorts, which included an adjacent sanctuary "temple." The journey was marked by significant levels of strangeness and coincidences, such as dogs howling, roosters crowing, unnatural shadows, and winds seemingly blowing from nowhere. Along the way, the forest bestowed me with a ritual whisk in the form of a small pine branch with needles. I instinctively knew to use this branch to consecrate myself, my assistant who was carrying the Sun, and the entire path to the site. I shook the needles to make noise and the trees shook as if in refrain.

After about an hour's hike, I finally found the rocky outcropping in my vision. It was bathed in sunlight on the other side of a steep ravine. I scaled the ravine and installed the sun on the outcropping. The Sun installation included two chilies (one for Sol and one for Terra), as well as all the soil I collected from the other sites and the flowers from the intermediary's bouquet.

The Result

In the weeks that followed, I returned to the nexus multiple times. I found the nexus had stabilized and found no evidence of blockages. The overall energies had amplified. I would describe the site as being in high definition. The leaves are a bit greener. The animals are a bit more expressive. Even the alien faux-Martian energy of the fae seemed to be working as intended.

During one visit, I was surprised to find a spring had sprung at the Lunar temple. Incredibly clear water poured out of the earth above a shallow cave in the cliff-side. The water was strongly tainted with Lunar energy. I collected some water for future experiments and left a token of my gratitude.

Cord Cutting Ritual

Black Candle

I found a need to end a long term relationship with a blood-relative that no longer served me. In some ways, this ritual took three years to complete. The initiation involved cutting physical contact, including a change of address and phone number. I spent time with elders and ancestral spirits cultivating understanding, so I had their support to cut contact. I changed the way I referred to the person in conversation, adopting new titles, and even abstaining from mentioning them for several weeks. I conducted frequent divinatory readings to understand my motivations and what gifts and scars this person had left on my shadow. After three years, I was mentally and emotionally prepared to no longer consider this person as family, friend, or acquaintance.

With all this in mind, I began by making a simple braided cord using colored string that was emblematic of the bond between us. I choose red to represent the blood we share, blue to represent the conscious impediments presented by the relationship, and black for the unconscious. As I wove the physical cord, I also wove in memories of the relationship, both good and bad. The cord became the physical manifestation of the love and loss between us. My blood, effort, and tears imbued the cord with life. I wove the strings with these subtler forces until I could feel the cord breath on its own.

Next, I gathered what few gifts and mementos I had left from the person. I burned them and invested the residual power into a Saturnian Sigil. I used this sigil to empower a Saturnian Candle the same way I would create any other talisman. With the preparations set, I could commence the ritual.

I set the appropriate mood with candles, incense, and music and achieved a light trance state. I lit the Saturnian Candle and held the cord before its flame. I recited this charm as many times as needed to gather sufficient energy such that I was convinced the Saturnian Flame would do as I instructed.

I cut the cord and ties that bind,
I separate your life from mine.

With good intent, we forget our past,
Neither blood nor time can hold us fast.

Let us bid our last farewell,
For within my mind you do not dwell.

With gratitude for lessons learned,
What's left between us be now burned.

Let this flame sever you from me,
Cut the cord, and set us free.

Upon uttering the final word, "free," I moved the cord into the flame and severed the connection. This charm is inspired by many other cord cutting rituals as can be found online. I structured this one to cover multiple planar bases; this includes body, mind, and soul, as well as physical, emotional, mental, and divine. The flame is meant to sever all connections and is a rejection of every facet of the relationship whether negative or positive. I embraced the lessons learned, but acknowledge they are my own and not the other person's. I reject any genetic relationship, any time spent together, and any notion that we may meet again.

Blowing out the candle seals the spell. I placed all biodegradable remnants into a sealed envelope and interred them to the Underworld.

Lucky Talisman

pendant

With the season of obligation upon us, I decided to bestow one of my relatives with a bit of magic. More specifically, I planned to gift them with a lucky talisman. I chose a pendant they would find aesthetically pleasing made from their birthstone. Ideally, the effect would complement their natural energies, which in this case were strongly lunar. I chose a balance of venusian and mercurial energies in the form of a mildly attractive glamour and a ward of protection during travel. These two effects should make the charm feel "lucky," at least as far as non-magical people are concerned.

Auspices

As I do with every most procedures, I conducted a reading to assess the possible outcomes. I used the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot to explore "what I needed to know" about creating and gifting this talisman. I generally use an intuitive (or improvised) form of Le Grand Tableau modified for the RWS. The outcome appeared generally positive in terms of this person's well-being and the relationship between us.

Harvesting

The initiation of a harvest is difficult to describe. In a way, I seem to send out a signal to the landscape that I'm looking for materials. I then get subtle information in return. This information feels like a tug in one direction or another, as if a string is attached to my head. As I get closer to what I need, I get the sense of a beacon floating high above the terrain like a way point on a map. I knew I needed something venusian and something mercurial to charge this talisman. I was led to a forest across town.

As I approached the forest, I knew I would find the venusian material first. I followed my "senses" as I always do. I was led to a part of the forest I had never been to before. It had just rained the day before and it was still overcast and chilly. The trail was muddy and seemed to get worse the closer I got to where I was going (where ever that was). I came to a steep ravine where the trail went down to a stream bed. I knew what I needed was across the ravine, so I carefully scaled the sides down and up.

Just on the other side, I found a cleared out hollow inside a thicket of trees and bushes. Inside I found a strange tree that had grown into a perfect fork. One side of the fork was alive and the other was dead and covered in fungi. The fungi emanated a strongly venusian energy. I harvested some and put it into my pack. As I made my way back and scaled the ravine for a second time, I got the sense that the mercurial material would be easier to get to, but harder to find.

I could sense Mercury lurking in another part of the forest far enough away that I would have to drive to get there. Upon arriving at the trailhead, I was greeted by two young men leaving the main trail. They were suspiciously under-dressed given the weather. I inquired about the state of the trail and they said it wasn't muddy, but very "quiet." As we parted ways, I felt a sudden urge to veer away from the main trail and circle around the edge of the forest through a meadow.

As I circled the forest, I found a sparsely-used animal trail leading into the forest. The forest floor was littered with a dense layer of dead pine needles. I followed the trail apprehensively being cautious of snakes. I eventually found my way to a ruined concrete wall blocking my way forward. The region beyond the wall appeared to be a hidden dumping ground containing piles of discarded construction materials like loose rock and metal. It was an apparent paradise of mercurial materials hidden under the forest canopy, but something didn't seem right.

I paid my respects at the wall, crossed the threshold, and waited. The forest was eerily quiet, just as the young men had said. The only movement I observed were falling dead and dry pine needles. I looked up and saw some of the pine needles were falling in pairs and every so often would catch on the limbs of a tree in the lower canopy. These strange dangling pine needles were what I needed. I stowed away some needles, navigated the ruined wall, and headed back. I noted as I left that I had passed thousands of dangling pine needles hanging within easy reach on smaller trees. I've grown used to this level of mercurial irony.

Empowering

With the harvested materials in hand, all that was left was to enchant the talisman. I created two sigils in the usual way, one of Venus and one of Mercury. I cleansed and balanced the pendant, sigils, harvested materials, and a working candle with incense smoke. I prepared myself mentally and magically with music and relaxation techniques.

I inscribed the sigils on paper and charged them each individually. I applied planetary circulation, "resting" in the relevant planet to charge the relevant sigil. While occupying the relevant planetary sphere, I entered a discourse with the harvested material in which I guided the energies to imbue the sigil with power. I saw the characters and lines of the sigil spark and smoke like a branding iron, which attracted additional energy from the environment like a fire consuming oxygen.

I completed the planetary cycle and grounded between each sigil. With the two sigils "charged", I started a new cycle but rested in Jupiter. Jupiter is where I staged the work to transfer power from the sigils to the pendant. All the work up to this point was aimed only at weaving together hidden threads (i.e. occult virtues). The effort of harvesting the materials, embellishing the sigils, and bathing them in planetary energy merely set the dominoes.

I released the power of each carefully crafted sigil by destroying it and ripping it to shreds. I quickly built a pile of shredded sigilized paper and harvested ingredients over the pendant. I guided the free energy into the pendant and set it to my intended task, that was bestowing the wearer with an aura of beauty and safe travels. I left the pendant to absorb the energies until the incense finished burning.

After the operation, the pendant was noticeably heavier and luminous with the appropriate energies. I wrapped it and sent it to my relative. I disposed of the sigil papers, ingredients, and incense dregs by burning and disposing of the ashes in a place in my garden reserved for this purpose.

Harvesting Mars

Harvest

I found myself back on the forest trail. I was making my way west towards the early evening sun. The tree tops above me glistened with an orange illumination. Much of the forest had grown quiet at my approach, save a few interested observers. Though my pace was relaxed, I was fuming with righteous indignation. My heart was beating like a war drum and the forest stood at attention. My intent was clear: the collection of material suitable to lay a terrible curse upon an enemy.

Despite my discontent, I kept my wits about me and settled my mind on the task. I closed my eyes and stretched out my palms towards the Earth and focused on the sensation of heat. I moved my hands as if reading invisible pages of braille. I was looking for a particular sensation; something that stung or burned enough to bring a tear to my eye. I stopped when I felt something like hot wax pour over my hand. I began walking in the direction of this sensation.

My hands led me to a small circle of pine trees where a thick pile of dried pine needles were singing a tune I was interested to hear. I picked up a handful of the dried pine needles and asked them if they could help me. They were eager to participate and quickly conveyed to me an energy I can only describe as punitive. No sooner had I stowed the pine needles into my pack when a sudden insight pulled me towards the river deeper into the forest.

Upon arriving at the river's edge, I found some discarded makeshift fishing tackle. Next to the water lay a couple plastic lures, string, and a bamboo pole. I saw no anglers and so assumed the items had been abandoned. I picked up the bamboo pole, which was no more than 1/2 inch thick, and was immediately struck by a common idiom. "Spare the rod, spoil the child." I took this to mean that the bamboo pole was also interested in lending its assistance.

Satisfied with these martial ingredients, I set back to the trail and on towards home. It was time to put these items to use.
